A pilot holding a Pilot (PG4) Licence with 3-5 years of experience whist flying at Lantau at approximately 12-1400hrs on Sunday 24th of August 2014.

The conditions at the time were reported to be Stable with a SE wind blowing approximately 0-10kph. The temperature was 30-34deg C with Some Cloud and Unlimited Visibility.

There were reported to be 6-10 pilots at the site.

Event Description:

It was my second flight with my brand new E7.
Done a short test flight same day 1 hour before: Thermaling a little bit, big ears, big ears with 360, wing over and beach landing.

I was following a nice thermal in front of TO which it brings me on west side above the TO, maybe 50 meters.
I had an asymmetric collapse, not that big but for some reasons it toke me to an heli.
I’ve tried to control it but after 2 turns, I’ve decided to full stall my glider in order to stop the heli.
Since I was too low already, I’ve kept the stall and impacted trees and ground gently few meters below the TO.
I’ve told my fellows over my radio that I was fine.
4 pilots came immediately to help me, thanks guys !

Why this incident ?:

• I was too confident after my test flight.
• I didn’t fly for 3 weeks.
• I didn’t fly a regular glider for at least 2 years, I flew only mini.
• Wind was SE to SEE which is created rotors on west side.
• I was too low to follow thermals on west side (more rotors).

I thought that light SE winds will be not turbulent on west side.
It’s certainly true with a mini, but not with a reg glider, maybe also a gust at this moment.

What I’ve learnt:

• Do not forget that mini is totally different than a reg glider, not safer or more dangerous, just different.
• Do few relax flights to understand a brand new glider, be conservative.
• Avoid rotors, that day thermals were everywhere…
• Stay humble.

What maybe avoid me injuries:

• Experience
• Active flight
• SIV in Pohkara, Nepal.

It is a reminder to all pilots to be ready to react to conditions at thermal sites,
Dont get into your harness to quickly untl you are away from the ridge and ACTIVELY FLY the wing until safely away from the ground.

Have a plan like this pilot and take the safety option.
