A pilot holding a Club Pilot (PG3) Licence with 3-5 years of experience whist flying at Cloudy Hill at approximately 06-1100hrs on Sunday 28th of September 2014.

The conditions at the time were reported to be Variable with a SE wind blowing approximately 10-15kph. The temperature was 30-34deg C with Moderate Cloud and Slight Haze Visibility.

There were reported to be 2-5 pilots at the site.

Event Description:

HKG ATC contacted HKPA to report that the PLA had complained of paragliders flying in the vicinity of SHEK KONG airport on the afternoon of the 29 sept 2014. The airfield was active with light aircraft and there was some concern as to the paragliders operating outside of the Zones and in proximity to the active airfield.

Thank you very much for the email. I was one of the pilot involved but this is the first email I received asking for a report.

It was a light day with few clouds when the 3 of us arrived at cloudy hill launch around 10am. The condition was deemed favourable for flying from cloudy hill which the wind was mainly SE with E occasionally and thermic activity.

We launched in turn uneventfully. The thermals was strong with maximum up to 8m/s. I climbed to cloud base first and the 2 other pilots joined me later. After flying for about 30 minutes, the clouds start to build up and we were in and out of clouds.

We soon realised that the clouds are too big and unpredictable and we were looking to land. Unfortunately, the clouds started to form columns (I'm sure the small aircraft pilots can confirm that) and we got lost in clouds. I contacted the others via radio and told them to stay away from the hills at least.

Upper level wind was quite a strong easterly and as soon as we were out of clouds, we have travelled about 6km east to where the aircrafts saw us.

We tried to stay as close to the hill as possible and try not to interfere with the landing approach of the aircrafts. We landed safely on a small field far away from the airport.

This is an unfortunate incident and fortunately there was no accident or injuries as a result.

Hi trevor,

At sunday, i going to try and fly cloudy hill, regarding to the forecast for cloudy hill was very good and flyable. We arrival take off around 10 am, which was very good condition for fly, so we take off then.

But after we take off the condition was changed and uneventfully. The culmns was change very quick at a the moment. (pilot 1) was asked us to stay away the cloud via radio but it is too late, I found i'm rasing more than 8m/s , i tried to descend but failure, after that we got lost in the cloud...the uper level wind was very strong, then we communicated via radio to confirm where we are located.

After we out of the cloud which was already around 5-6km east. At this moment i only define we must have to landing, regarding not safe at the air. Very lucky we found a small and safe field very closed to the hill, at my memorize the small field is quite far from u mentioned "shek kong" .

It is a very lucky finally we landed safety without any injuries.
