A pilot holding a Club Pilot (PG3) Licence with 3-5 years of experience whist flying at Shek O at approximately 12-1400hrs on Wednesday 1st of January 2014.

There were reported to be 6-10 pilots at the site.

Factors in this Accident:
Impact with Obstacle
Undershoot LZ
Water Landing

Event Description:

During the landing approach at Rocky Beach pilot hit big sink and it become clear that pilot could not clear the fence towards the golf course.

Pilot decided to try an approach over pond to clear the lower fence but even that didn't work out (missing by 50 centimeters).

Pilot had a quite hard impact into the fence (which slightly gave way), then slid down into the pond water.

No injury to the pilot but three lines broken.

Advice for other pilots, always assume that there could be big sink coming into landing at Rocky Beach. Better come in too high (in case you are coming in too high you still have the beach to land).

Committee Response: (if any )

Please review the site guide for Shek O which describes the LZ. As you can see there is an upslope as you land which makes the landing more easy, and the need to cross the fence at a higher height a better option

Committee Action: (if any )
