A pilot holding a Unknown Licence with Unknown years of experience whist flying at Lantau at approximately 15-1700hrs on Saturday 1st of June 2013.

The conditions at the time were reported to be Smooth with a SW wind blowing approximately 16-20kph. The temperature was 30-34deg C with Nil Cloud and Unlimited Visibility.

There were reported to be 6-10 pilots at the site.

Factors in this Accident:
Undershoot LZ
Upsetting Neighbours
Water Landing

Event Description:

Witness reports state that pilot involved flew too far out to sea then turned back to land in the water short of the beach at around 1630.

Apparently, the pilot involved was very lucky to have people in attendance nearby to rescue the pilot in the water as the pilot involved was struggling to swim.

When crossing from land over water the high the pilot had was around 300-400 m I would say Distance from beach when 180 degree turn back to land was made: estimated at least 500 m from the beach, half way between beach and the small Island

2nd mistake: did not go the shortest way back to the beach but tried to land near Sports Centre, maybe 90 degree approach to beach would have been smarter

3rd and biggest mistake: landed with both legs still in the harness (enclosed harness) and all buckles closed..., did not "jump out" shortly before hitting the water

Committee Response: (if any )

The committee would very much like to hear directly from the pilot involved. Water landings are very dangerous and any information from the pilot involved about issues / threats would be helpful in avoiding this situation in the future. Please email ( all information will be kept anonymous )
